PASSION FOR WRITING, READING IS MUST

PASSION FOR WRITING, READING IS MUST

Life has taken me down many roads and shown me a variety of interests. The written word, however, has remained constant. I live and love to write. In my school years, I learned the academic style and found a passion for writing. I set the tone for my writing not as an interest, but as a passion. I now pursue this passion on a personal level. Writing is integral to my existence, but do I have a passion for it? When people ask me what I do? I tell them I am a writer. I would further have to say that my relationship with writing goes beyond passion. It is simply my identity, part of which I am, something that is in my DNA. I often say writing is like breathing for me; it is just something I have to do.
From my childhood, I had a passion for reading and writing which opens up the world for kindergartners. Reading is a subject and a process that reaches all levels of education world and is a topic of discussion by students, parents, teachers, professors and politicians. Improving your reading, writing and number skills can give you confidence you never knew you had. It can help to plan you money, get another job, help you child with homework, fill in forms and give you new confidence. To become a good writer, all you need is a place to find inspiration, hints, tips and all the writers’ resources. Passion for reading also has a profound effect on the teaching of reading in our schools. It is surprising sometimes how the inspiration comes to you when you least expect it. Walking through a part and just relaxing on a seat and all of a sudden you get a new idea for an article topic, the title for your new book or a great subject for a novel. You can be a very good writer but if you don’t provide for your readers exactly what they are interested.
I still keep afresh my memories of 1967-69, when my first letter to the editor appeared which I feel pleasure to share :
TRIBUNE MEANS…. With reference to the article headline, “Impressions – The Tribune through years” by P.D.Shastri (March 24), it was very informative. I was happy to learn about the history of The Tribune. I remember an incident, when I was a student of Mechanical Diploma; one of my classmates asked me the meaning of “Tribune”. Since it was my habit to always search out the meaning of every title, whether of paper or book, I told him that in my dictionary, it meant a place from where the speeches are delivered. My classmates bet a tea party that I was wrong but I had the right answer. Sometimes I ask someone just in a casual way, the meaning of The Tribune. Some relate the word to “tribune”, some say it is just a name. Hardly anyone knows the correct answer. The Collins English Gem dictionary ling on my study table these days defines the word thus: “no popular leader. Speaker’s platform; Bishop’s throne “.
The publication of this letter in the editor’s mail column those days was a landmark in my passion for writing. That is the reason, I appeared in Editor’s Mail column regularly and has countless letters published. Now, wherever any of mine letters is published, I got a number of calls from well-wishers congratulating me which gives me more strength and power for the next write-up. This recognition is an honour that keeps me writing.
The passion of writing compelled me to go in for PG in Mass Communication at the age of 58, the year of my retirement. Even I could contribute one article on Louise Braille at about one –third space of editorial page. The magic which I gathered was that if you want to write, read as much as you can.
Writing is simply something I just do. I write in a variety of styles to keep my mind active and quick on its feet. The written word I produce in any format is my passion. I have many interests. I have now one passion – writing. My special thanks to the Tribune for giving me a space.
